No Hot Water From Oil Boiler

How to reset an oil boiler safely

A reset may clear a one-off oil burner lockout, but it does not repair the cause of a recurring fault. Follow the boiler manufacturer's instructions and never continue resetting a burner that will not start normally.

Checks before pressing reset

  • Make sure there is heating oil in the tank.
  • Confirm the boiler has power and the controls are calling for heating or hot water.
  • Look for oil leaks, smoke, soot or signs of overheating.
  • Check for a strong smell of oil or combustion fumes.
  • Listen for unusual banging, rumbling or repeated failed ignition attempts.

If you notice any of these warning signs, switch the boiler off and contact an oil heating engineer. Do not remove the burner cover or attempt to bleed the oil line unless you are trained and equipped to recommission the burner.

One reset only

Locate the reset button described in the boiler manual and press it once. Allow the appliance time to complete its normal starting sequence. If it starts and runs normally, monitor it. If the lockout returns, do not press reset again.

Repeated resets can send unburned oil into the combustion chamber. This can create smoke, delayed ignition and a more serious repair.

Why oil boilers lock out

Common causes include running out of oil, air in the fuel line, a blocked filter or nozzle, ignition failure, a dirty or faulty photocell, pump problems, poor combustion or an electrical control fault. Testing is needed to identify the actual cause.

No hot water from an oil boiler quick checks

If your oil boiler is running but you have no hot water, the fault can be simple, but it can also point to a burner, controls, pump or hot water cylinder problem. This guide is for homeowners in Gloucester and nearby Gloucestershire areas who want to make a few safe checks before booking a repair.

Quick checks before calling an engineer

1. Check the programmer or timer. Make sure hot water is switched on and that the clock has not reset after a power cut.

2. Check the cylinder thermostat. If you have a hot water cylinder, the thermostat may be turned down or not calling correctly. Around 60C is common for stored hot water.

3. Check the oil level. If the tank is low or has run out, the boiler may lock out and need proper bleeding and recommissioning.

4. Look for burner lockout. If the red lockout light is on, try one reset only. If it locks out again, stop resetting it and call an oil boiler engineer. Repeated resets can make the fault worse.

5. Check whether the heating works. If the radiators get hot but the hot water does not, the fault may be with a motorised valve, pump, thermostat, programmer or hot water cylinder controls.

Common causes of no hot water

No hot water from an oil boiler can be caused by a faulty programmer, failed thermostat, stuck motorised valve, worn pump, airlock, blocked filter, dirty nozzle, photocell fault, poor combustion or burner lockout. Older systems can also suffer from wiring centre faults or cylinder coil issues.

When to call for help

Call an engineer if the burner locks out again after one reset, the boiler smells of oil or fumes, there is soot around the appliance, the boiler is noisy, or the hot water keeps cutting out. Do not remove the burner cover or adjust oil burner settings yourself.
